Entre 1965 e 1970, o Festival Brasileiro de Cinema Amador JB/Mesbla agregou a produção de jovens cineastas ao redor do país. Precursor dos festivais de curtas-metragens, que durante a história do cinema brasileiro se configuraram como espaços formativos importantes, incentivando conexões artísticas e profissionais e promovendo a difusão do filme curto, aqui apresentamos cinco curtas-metragens que fizeram parte do certame em diferentes anos da sua realização. Produzidos na bitola amadora da época, o 16mm, esses primeiros filmes de jovens diretores sedimentam respostas ao intenso anos 1960 e dão a ver gestos cinematográficos que atravessariam a obra de seus diretores.
Between 1965 and 1970, the Brazilian Festival of Amateur Cinema JB / Mesbla brought together the production of young filmmakers around the country. Precursor of short film festivals, which during the history of Brazilian cinema were important formative spaces, encouraging artistic and professional connections and promoting the diffusion of the short film, here we present five short films that were part of the event in different years of its editions. Produced on the amateur format of the time, the 16mm, these first films by young directors sediment answers to the intense 1960s and show cinematic gestures that would cross the work of their directors.
ESCRAVOS DE JOB [ 1965 . 13′. Brasil (RJ) . 16mm >> digital ]

Sinopse: Documentário de Xavier de Oliveira realizado no ano de 1965, na Favela da Rocinha, sobre a vida das crianças obrigadas a trabalhar, seja na própria comunidade, seja fora dela, e em situações degradantes de sobrevivência, em vez de estarem na escola, ou em alguma atividade lúdica, própria da idade. “Escravos de Job” pretente ser uma pequena amostragem de um dilema que vem, infelizmente, se perpetuando em nossa sociedade. Este curta-metragem foi o vencedor do Primeiro Festival de Cinema Amador, do Rio de Janeiro, promovido pelo Jornal do Brasil e Mesbla.
Synopsis: A documentary by Xavier de Oliveira, made in 1965, in Favela da Rocinha, about the lives of children forced to work, whether in the community or outside, and in degrading situations of survival, instead of being at school, or in some playful activity, proper to their age. “Job’s slaves” is intended to be a small sample of a dilemma that has unfortunately been perpetuating in our society. This short film was the winner of the First Amateur Film Festival, in Rio de Janeiro, promoted by Jornal do Brasil and Mesbla.

Sinopse: A Falência é filmado em meados de 1966, em meio à grande crise econômica que levou ao desaparecimento de centenas de empresas brasileiras e ao desemprego cerca de 200.000 operários em todo o país. O filme se divide em 4 sequências: os últimos dias em funcionamento Fábrica de Tecidos Confiança, em Vila Isabel; o interior da fábrica abandonada; o leilão judicial dos bens da empresa; a conversa dos empregados na barbearia da Vila Operária.
Synopsis: A Falência is filmed in mid-1966, in the midst of the great economic crisis that led to the disappearance of hundreds of Brazilian companies and the unemployment of approximately 200,000 workers across the country. The film is divided into 4 sequences: the last days in operation Fábrica de Tecidos Confiança, in Vila Isabel; the interior of the abandoned factory; the judicial auction of the company’s assets; the conversation of the employees at the barber shop in worker’s neighborhood.
PANTERA NEGRA [ 1968, 3′. Brasil (RJ) . 16mm >> digital ]

Sinopse: Pantera Negra ganhou menção honrosa no IV Festival de Cinema Amador JB/Mesbla, em 1968. Um filme musical, desenhado e pintado à mão sobre película 16mm, com a inserção de várias fotos do movimento negro nos Estados Unidos, atravessado pela morte de Luther King. Foi a primeira experiência com cinema de animação do artista e ilustrador Jô Oliveira, na época, estudante da Escola Nacional de Belas Artes, integrante do grupo Fotograma, organização que reunia o trabalho de diversos artistas e promovia o cinema de animação no Brasil. O filme foi digitalizado em 2019, o que permitiu a sua redescoberta como um material importante para história do cinema experimental no Brasil. O material original, com as cores pintadas em nanquim, está sob os cuidados do artista. A música é “Tiger Rag” foi retirada de um disco longplay.
Synopsis: Black Panther won an honorable mention at the IV Amador JB / Mesbla Film Festival, in 1968. A hand-painted musical, drawn and hand-painted on 16mm film, with the insertion of several photos of the black movement in the United States, crossed by the death of Luther King. This film was the first experience with animation cinema by the artist and illustrator Jô Oliveira, at the time a member of the Fotograma group, an organization that brought together the work of several artists and promoted animation cinema in Brazil. The film was digitized in 2019, which allowed its rediscovery as an important material for the history of experimental cinema in Brazil. The original material, with the colors painted in ink, is under the care of the artist. The song “Tiger Rag” was taken from a longplay disc.

Sinopse: Um rapaz de classe média baixa, desempregado, acorda tarde e sai de casa. Vai procurar um amigo e rompe com ele. Rapaz perambula por São Paulo. À noite, encontra um parceiro na Galeria Metrópole.
Synopsis: An unemployed, lower-middle-class boy wakes up late and leaves the house. Goes to meet a friend and break up with him. Boy wanders around São Paulo. In the evening, finds a partner at Galeria Metrópole.
